We’re going to be looking at the entry-level position of becoming a game tester. As an entry-level position, you can get hired for it without having previous experience in game development or working with video game companies.

Of course, any experience in the field will give you a leg-up, and that’s why intern positions can be very popular at game companies, especially the larger companies who are releasing top-tier games.

There’s a bit of a misconception that you just sit around playing video games all day. Essentially, this is true, however you’re playing games that aren’t even necessarily completed yet. Games in their alpha and beta modes, that will likely contain bugs and glitches. For someone who’s really into games and how they work, this can be an intriguing look into the process.

So basically you are playing through games all day, however in some cases you may be playing the same level over and over, different ways, to try out all the possibilities and eliminate as many bugs as possible. Often you’ll keep track of where glitches occur, so that you can inform the programming team and they can fix it for the next version of the game.

Many game testers find it a nice perk to be able to get early peeks at upcoming games, to literally be amongst the first people to play these new games, and to know that their work has a big impact on the quality of the finished product.

Game testing is also considered to be a stepping-stone to other jobs at a game company. Game testers don’t necessarily need any education in programming or computer science, however there are graduates working as game testers as a way to get their feet in the door.
